ACARA reports that in 2023, 24.2% of students in Australian schools received adjustments to provide education on the same basis as their peers. In South Australia, that proportion was 29.2%.
AITSL standards outlining Professional Knowledge and Professional Practice are often not met for students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders as many teachers are not equipped to support the increase of complex needs in their classroom.
A successful teacher’s pedagogy increasingly relies on the understanding of a wide range of complexities they face. While many educators reflect on their desire to support these students, they recognise they do not have the skills or confidence.
For more information on the above data, please refer to the ACARA website.
Teacher Support Programs
Teacher Support Program
This program is suited for early career teachers or those lacking the confidence to teach students with a disability or Specific Learning Disorders. Educators will be supported in removing barriers by utilising a strengths based approach and developing a better understanding of the complexities of their students.
Teacher support will begin prior to the day session to establish their goals for the training and provide an overview of student complexities in their classes. This ensures an individualised approach making support relevant to the educator’s needs.
A written overview of the day’s outcomes and SMART goals will be provided to the school after the face to face session and a review meeting with the teacher to discuss their progress and understanding of any supporting information supplied.
Teacher Support Program Review
This half day program is only available for teachers who have completed the full day program and is recommended 3 – 5 weeks after the final review meeting.
This time provides the opportunity for a final classroom observation and reflection. This will be followed by reviewing and revising previously set goals. Teachers will be informed of relevant professional development available to support their continued development in inclusive education.
Tools for Differentiating for Individual Students with Disabilities
Differentiation for Individual Students
This package is designed to provide explicit adjustments that support individual students with a disability or Specific Learning Disorders.
The package will include:
classroom observation and face to face time with the student
review of academic or language assessment
review of school learning plans
feedback survey from main educators
A written overview will be provided to the school outlining specific strategies that can aid educators to better support the student, including recommended adjustments to student learning. Examples of how these adjustments can be documented effectively against NCCD categories will also be noted.
Parent Workshops
Supporting your Child’s Maths at Home
Maths in primary school can be overwhelming for many of our kids and it’s hard to know how to help them.
In this parent workshop, Sam unpacks the reasons why your children may be struggling and provides systematic ways they can positively be supported at home.
This 90 minute presentation is broken into 3 sections:
What is Maths?
Why is Maths hard for my child?
Strategies at Home
While this workshop is aimed at parents of primary aged children, it can be relevant for parents of older students requiring intervention support.
Sam is an exceptional inclusive educator whose unwavering passion and expertise shine in her work with children. She creates an environment where every child feels valued and empowered, tailoring her approach to their unique needs and fostering growth in a way that’s both inspiring and impactful. Her creativity and patience transform challenges into opportunities, helping children reach their full potential with confidence and joy.
teacher, Sacred Heart College
Sam’s parent workshop was practical and informative. Sam meets parents both as a parent and a maths teacher, helping them to understand why their children are experiencing difficulties and what they can do to strengthen basic maths skills.
